The 1995 release of Father And Son paired two legends of soul music, singer and producer Gerald LeVert (b. 13 July 1966, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, d. 10 November 2006, Cleveland, Ohio, USA) and his father Eddie, lead singer and founding member of the O'Jays. The album featured a combination of original songs written expressly for the purpose by the duo and a selection of cover versions, including several O'Jays remakes. Produced by Gerald and Tony Nicholas, a co-writer on the project who had worked extensively with Gerald in the past, the album was prompted by requests from fans after the father and son team had performed together in concert on several occasions. With 10 gold and four platinum albums between them, it was a partnership bound to appeal to fans of soul and R&B. The pair had first recorded a duet, "Baby Hold On To Me", for Gerald's 1991 debut solo album, Private Line. It reached the top of the US R&B singles chart in January 1992. In addition to the customary accompanying promotional tour for Father And Son, the duo also announced details of a new national scholarship fund overseen by Eddie's 100 Black Men collective.
