《生化危机》无疑是CAPCOM的镇社大作，然而与SQUARE、ENIX不同的是，“生化危机”并不是造就CAPCOM成功的作品。直到3月22日《生化危机》发售前，几乎没人预料到一个崭新“恐怖时代”的来临。在当时FAMITSU新作期待榜前五十名内甚至都没有它的身影。因此1996年3月22日《生化危机》发售时，史上最强黑马诞生了！最终全球574万份的销量恐怕已经超越了CAPCOM和制作人三上真司最狂野的想象力。在当时，由于2D街机游戏的没落，CAPCOM的一大批经典街机大作无一例外的遭受着冷淡的市场反映，王牌系列《街头霸王》也风光不在。恰在此时，《生化危机》的诞生让CAPCOM再度以一流厂商的高姿态展现在世人面前，该作的诞生不仅为CAPCOM带来了荣誉和大量实际利益，也宣告着“恐怖时代”的到来，“生存恐怖”类游戏成为冒险游戏一大分支而开始广为流传。
