忘记八十年代末与eric b.一同创造的辉煌，忘记九十年代初与eric b.一同经历的官司......，还是在mca时，rakim曾为电影gunmen献上唯一一首在mca正式发表的单曲heat it up。后来，在又录制了几首小样后，随着公司的重组，rakim的专辑计划也随之搁浅，这也直接导致了与universal的一纸合同的产生。97年底，久违了的说唱之王的个人专辑the 18th letter终于问世(the 18th letter分单cd和双cd两个版本，双cd包括与eric b.组队时期的经典歌曲)。the 18th letter可以说是90年代一批资格老的rapper所发的专辑中最好的之一。由于和几位名dj合作，歌曲本身的技术含量自不必说，而且rakim本人也亲自参与了几首歌曲的创作。尽管经历了4-5年的空白期，但rakim那无以匹敌的写词技巧和高超的flow甚至显得越发的纯熟，对歌曲的把握度也老练了许多。
