These historic recordings are living documents of the very first concerts of extra-European music, organised by the WDR (West German Radio and Television Network), in 1970 and recorded in top audio quality in the network’s large concert studio.
The brothers Nazakat and Salamat Ali Khan are legends in the world of North Indian classical music. They are exponents of the Khyal, a vocal style going back to the 15th Century and regarded as the highest and most significant form of North Indian instrumental and vocal music.
The Khan family has cultivated the Khyal for generations and the two brothers have developed it to further heights of perfection. As Nazakat Ali Khan died at an early age, these recordings are rare documents of the Indian vocal art at its very best. On this CD, the two Ragas and the Thumri performed by the Ali brothers are additionally accompanied by the Sarangi string instrument, the tambura and the tabla. "In my childhood home, I got to know the masterly art of Khyal singing by Nazakat & Salamat Ali Khan. And they have been my idols ever since." (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan)
