Johann Sebastian Bach`s Six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin are considered by musicians and music-lovers worldwide to be masterpieces that combine exacting spirituality with perfect virtuosity. Yehudi Menuhin made the now legendary recordings of the cycle in the mid-1930s. The recordings on the present CD were made at the Abbey Road Studios in London in 1957, and therefore around the time that the facsimile of Bach`s autograph score was published. In his foreword to that publication, Yehudi Menuhin expressed his profound reverence for the great man and his compositions thus: "When I look at Bach`s signature, I seem to perceive a heavenly body on the move, and to be a witness of how a natural phenomenon is developing according to the immutable world order in which we humans are merely a minute part. It is therefore no wonder that we perceive Bach`s music as universal."
