This volume (#14) of the Philips Complete Mozart Edition contains superb versions of the Piano Trios
Clarinet Trio, Piano Quartets, Piano/Winds Quintet, and two works for glass harmonica (k 617 and 356/617a) The Beaux Arts Trio recorded the Mozart Trios twice. The is the second version, including
also the unfinished trio k442 (which was not included in the first version).#2 includes more repeats than #1 (see my review) and the #2 violinist Isidore Cohen sounds a bit sweeter than Daniel Guilet in #1.
However, I find #1,on Philips Duo, a bit livelier. Menahem Pressler is excellent in both, and better
than that in the two Piano Quartets (k478 and 493). Here he matches (at least) Curzon/Amadeus Quartet/Decca) and Haebler/Berlin PO members/Philips in two of his greatest non-Trio readings-the third is his Trout Quintet, followed closely by his Schumann Piano Quartet and Quintet.
The Brendel Piano/Wind Quintet k452 is not peerless, but that is true of other equally recommendable
versions: Haebler/Bamberg winds; Gulda/VPO winds; Lupu/RCOA winds and Rudolf Serkin/ Philadelphia
Orchestra winds.
The Glass Harmonica sound itself I find soewhat unpleasant, but the two short works themselves breathe the air of Magic Flute (ditto for the wonderful piano Andante k616). In all, this is a terrific set.
