Blue Cartoon's music is sprinkled with subtleties that unfold with repeated listens; yet somehow never stray too far from the 'pure pop' values that has served as the band's central point since the mid 90's... their arrangements, on this release, also take a tectonic leap up with all sorts of Wilson inspired percussion, bells and open-aired space that makes the vocals soar in every moment... Pop Perfection of the highest sort... One of 2006's very, very best!! --Bruce Brodeen, NotLame Recording Co.
September Songs is the fourth release from Austin, Texas based roots-pop veterans Blue Cartoon. For the unfamiliar, Blue Cartoon's music can best be described as a folk-based power-pop concoction that sits somewhere between The Jayhawks and Teenage Fanclub. Blue Cartoon s vocal arrangements have drawn comparisons to the likes of CSN&Y, The Byrds and The Thorns. With three fine songwriters in the band, Blue Cartoon s records have consistently been full of gems. After a four-year hiatus Blue Cartoon has returned with a veritable treasure. Opening with the early-70 s rawness of Just A Little More and closing with the pensive In My Lifetime , September Songs is a 13-track abstraction of memories and observations as can only be painted from the vista of impending maturity. Overtones of Blue Cartoon s Californian upbringings are also woven throughout- listen for the rough beauty of Crazy Horse on She Comes In Threes , the Doors-meets-Grateful Dead cosmic surf vibe on Where I Wanna Be , The Laurel Canyon haziness of The World Goes By and the top-down mountain joyride of Bonny Doon .
