Loose and playful are hardly terms you'd normally throw around when describing the music of Justin Vernon, the Grammy-winning, falsetto-wielding critical darling who makes soulful, introspective modern folk music with his band Bon Iver. So we can be taken aback just a bit when taking in Grownass Man (April 16, , the amusingly-titled and surprisingly rambunctious and ramshackle new album from Vernon (minus the falsetto this time) and his buds Phil Cook and Brian Moen as The Shouting Matches. While there are touches of Vernon's earnest thoughtfulness throughout the project, Grownass Man is rich in the classic -- and basic -- blues/rock tradition, heartfelt three-chord majesty that plants one scuffed boot in American roots music and the other in nostalgic 70's rock (check out the swaying "Gallup, NM" with its dense organ fills and meandering guitar solo).
