Mates of State are an American indie pop duo, active since 1997.[1] The group is composed of the husband-and-wife team of Kori Gardner (vocals, organ, synthesizer, piano, electric piano, and occasional guitar) and Jason Hammel (vocals, drums, percussion, and occasional synthesizer). Over the course of the band's fourteen year career, they've released three EPs and six full-length, studio albums. Their most recent album, Crushes (The Covers Mixtape), consisted entirely of covers and was a tribute album of sorts to some of their favorite artists and their compositions. Their seventh album Mountaintops will be released on September 13, 2011.

They will also be joining the ritual at The Voodoo Experience 2011 which is held at City Park in New Orleans, Louisiana on October 28-30. Mates of State last played The Voodoo Experience in 2009.
