Shane Eli is an emerging hip-hop artist and producer. He is releasing his debut album, The Push, in Spring, 2010.
The diversity of Shane’s sound reflects his passion for a wide range of music. Born in Canada, Shane grew up in Los Angeles, and lived in the Bahamas for extended periods. His varied repertoire is the outcome of his exposure to different cultural experiences and the soundtrack of his family’s eclectic music collection. “My influences are pretty diverse. The first albums I bought were Wrecks n’ Effect’s Hard or Smooth and Offspring’s Smash. I grew up in a household where my mom played everything from Ella Fitzgerald to Joe Cocker. It taught me to learn to love good music - not just good hip hop.”
Writing poetry and lyrics as a teenager, Shane began experimenting by rapping over instrumentals, and battling other MC’s to sharpen his skills. While attending university in Canada in 2001, Shane got involved in the local hip-hop scene and was invited to join Central Soul Music Group, an independent music collective. In a makeshift studio in East Vancouver, he learned the fundamentals of beat making. In 2004, Shane performed as an opening act for Common at the Commodore Ballroom, and for Ludacris & Ciara at the Pacific Coliseum.
Shane is passionate about listening to, and creating, music. Although he credits a variety of influences, his music is a reflection of himself. “I think our art is only as diverse and expressive as we allow ourselves to be. I feel like, in order to be true to myself, I can’t pretend I’m selling coke and popping bottles, so instead of looking outward to a lot of the people already successful in hip hop - I looked in.”
