在这部垂直极限（vertical limit）中，开幕曲“utah”刚开始让人感到有一种丛林的节奏，这似乎与惊险的登山场面有些出入，不过这首曲子很短。紧随其后的“three years later”先是平和浪漫的旋律，接着是强劲的人声伴随紧张焦虑的气氛，然后振奋人心的主题开始奏响并将曲子带入高潮。“base camp”的特色是沉重的弦乐及铜管乐器还有前面提到的那种丛林般的节奏。“avalanche”和“Peter's Jump/Tom's Heart”的效果十分震撼，主题也更突出。而“nitro”以大量的打击乐器暗示了紧张的气氛。“spindrift”前半段是同样的紧张气氛，后面更是声势浩大。遗憾的是，富于思想性的“your father was a smart man”和“annie and peter”并不很和谐，这些本应是很浪漫的曲段的出现和结束一点先兆也没有，从而显得有些不合逻辑。

supremely visceral action score in the grand tradition of Jerry Goldsmith, Vertical Limit operates on pure adrenaline. James Newton Howard breaks no new ground here, but the sheer intensity of his approach renders such arguments moot. Howard's themes are bold and epic, wrought from sweeping string arrangements and piledriving rhythms; self-explanatory cues like "Avalanche" and "Nitro" operate on such a profoundly visual plane that the onscreen narrative seems almost superfluous.
